A Message to Our Families from Susan Andreas-Bervel, Superintendent

As we close out the 2019-2020 school year, we reflect on how this year is ending in a much different way than we had ever anticipated. We appreciate everything our parents have done to support their children during this unexpected time of home instruction. I know the question on everyone's mind is, "What is school going to be like in August?" This morning, Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) released "A Planning Framework for the 2020-2021 School Year." You may see this on the news. We want to assure you that we have a committee in place, made up of teachers, administrators, and other staff, to look at the different scenarios that may be necessary to reopen. We are making plans for three different options: 1) Face-to-face learning, 2) Distance Learning (online only), and 3) Hybrid program, which would combine Distance Learning with some time in class. Our schools are at the heart of our community, and our commitment to meal service, instructional learning, vaccination clinics, technology support, and social-emotional well-being has provided a foundation for our families during this crisis. There are many different considerations that we must prepare for, including the safety and health of our students, staff, and families. All the superintendents in the Antelope Valley have been collaborating and working together since school closed, and will continue to plan and share resources. We work closely with the Antelope Valley High School District, as we know that many families have children in grades 9-12. We do not know what the future holds, and we are working to have defined plans in place, depending upon the progression of COVID-19 and the guidance from the state, LACOE, and the Department of Public Health. We are finalizing a parent survey, which will go out by Friday, to get information and feedback from our families on Distance Learning. We will use this information to guide our decisions as we look at the three different options for school reopening. Please watch for fliers to come home with meal service, as well as communications via teleparent, our website, and social media, to get the link to our survey. We want to hear from you! Thank you for entrusting the education of your children to us. Working together, we will continue to rise to meet this challenge!
